The Jesuits

The Jesuits — Faction Bible (working title)

The Regime’s elite order of sanctioned precogs — tasked with enforcing the Future. They do not dream it. They make it obey.

An eye under discipline — diamond pupil locked in a ruled frame, sight-line barred, martial tick marks like a gauge. Stippled woodcut white-on-black: the Oracle’s diamond made into a boot.

They do not dream the future. Their mark is foresight under restraint — monastic and martial at once. Where the Oracle’s diamond floats free above the horizon, theirs is bracketed, measured, sealed. Failed Jesuits leave that lock behind; street Seers never wore it.

Overview

A cloistered, religious-technological order inside the Regime — the Jesuits of the Oracle. They identify and train precogs, blending quantum theology with mysticism, and turn latent foresight into an instrument of state control. To those who buy the early piety, they are holy functionaries of the Second Dawn. To themselves they are the extension of a single sight: the Oracle’s.

Recruitment & Training

The order takes latent precogs — often as children — and forges them into instruments of control. Through brutal training, relentless discipline, and the erasure of personal ambition, they are bound to the Regime’s will. What remains is not a person who sees, but a tool that enforces what has already been seen.

The Forbidden Sight

Jesuits are forbidden from unrestricted foresight. To foretell the future is a sacred right reserved for the Oracle alone. Her visions are grand, often abstract — spanning years or generations. The Jesuits translate those vast futures into immediate action: guiding policy, suppressing threats, ensuring the state’s plan unfolds as foreseen.

They are the Oracle’s hands. They are not permitted to be her rivals.

Covens

The prohibition is unbearable for many — the temptation a gnawing presence in the mind. In hidden places, Jesuits gather in secret Covens, linking minds in unsanctioned communion to achieve oracle-like visions. The rituals are dangerous to both mind and state. Covens are illegal, heretical. Still, they persist.

Some call them rebellion. Others, lapses of faith. The darker reading is simpler: those who attend have already seen themselves there.

“No one finds a Coven by chance. You are led there by the echo of a future already lived.” — Anonymous Jesuit, executed for heresy

Failures & Exiles

Not every initiate holds. Failed Jesuits — cast out, broken, or fled — surface in the margins as the Resistance’s Psionic Shadows, or as the rare genuine talent among the street Seers. The order’s rejects are one of the world’s few sources of unsanctioned foresight.

  • How absolute is the Oracle’s monopoly on sight — does any Jesuit ever receive a true vision outside her, and what happens when they do?
  • Are Covens hunted ruthlessly, or quietly tolerated as a pressure valve the Regime cannot fully close?
  • Who runs the order day to day — a Superior under the Oracle, a council, the Information Bureau?
  • How young are the children taken, and is there any path out that is not failure, exile, or death?
  • When a Jesuit’s translation of the Oracle’s vision fails in the world — who is blamed, the hand or the dream?
